Are You Ready to Get a Communicative Disorders Degree?

pWith a growing elderly population as well as advancing diagnostic techniques, the fields of speech language pathology and audiology are growing. Many universities are offering a communicative disorders degree with accompanying skilled departments designed to groom the student for a postgraduate masters or doctorate in this field.  If your only intent is a bachelor’s degree you should probably consider another type of degree.

Are you Committed?

If you are researching this possibility be forewarned, although potentially a very rewarding and satisfying field of work to prepare for and enter—serious enquiries only. The majority of people pursuing this degree are in it to win it and know that these four years are just a stepping stone for the next four years. Graduate school entry can also be extremely competitive, therefore when choosing this path, bear this in mind. If you are passionate about this field, and go into higher education understanding this about your career path, the likelihood of your success is greatly increased in this competitive area.

What Can You Expect?

Do expect a challenge; make sure you are up to this task by knowing what is expected of you. Most post graduate programs require a minimum GPA of 3.2, with the majority selecting candidates that fall in the 3.75-3.8 range. Know that this is worth it, especially if you intend to go the Doctorate route, many institutions offer fellowships for qualified candidates, offsetting the cost of this continuing education as well as living expenses. In a nutshell , if you do well here, your quality work just may fund your graduate degree. Other things that you may want to have on your radar in order to ensure a solid post grad application are  volunteer work (your school can help with this)and, research and publication. Don’t make the mistake of underestimating the power of a solid undergraduate degree.

If a communicative disorders degree still sounds compelling, then by all means, move forward with your passion! Research local and distal programs online. Call the advisors in these programs, ask questions, and make sure that the program you choose will not only be a good choice for you now but also in four years when you are applying for your masters or doctorate. Know that the school that you are giving so much to now will provide a foundation that will support you throughout your entire career.
